Dan Martinez, Fernie Castor, Gilbert Nevarez were selected Child
Crisis Center Ambassadors in 2006 because of their tireless efforts
in coordinating the Ashley and Brandon Memorial Golf Tournament.
David Elwell joined the elite group in 2007 and earned his
ambassadorship because of his dedication and desire to help the
children served by the Center by giving his time and resources for
the success of the tournament.

In March of 2001, Gilbert Nevarez’s children, Ashley and Brandon,
were taken from this world in an act of rage and violence.  The
tragedy was felt by the entire community but Gilbert was left
mourning the loss of his loved children.  Dan, Fernie and Gilbert
were friends from Austin High School.  They vowed to never forget
Ashley and Brandon so in 2002, they put on the first Ashley and
Brandon Memorial Golf Tournament.  The tournament participants
were primarily a group of friends and business acquaintances who
came together and raised approximately $1000.  They chose to
donate the money to the Child Crisis Center.  They continued to
host the tournament for the next three years and continued to
donate the proceeds to the Center, gradually increasing the amount
of money raised.  In 2006, Dan, Victor and Gilbert agreed to allow
the Center to host the tournament as an official Center activity,
allowing for the Center to bring in major corporate sponsorship.
However, Dan, Victor and Gilbert requested they be allowed to
continue coordinating the event.  In 2006, the tournament raised in
excess of $24,000 and the 2007 tournament enjoyed equal
success.  David Elwell had participated in the event for many years
and in 2007 requested to join the coordinating committee.  He was
largely responsible for the tremendous success of the 2007 event.

“When I learned of the horrific tragedy that affected my close friend
Gilbert and his family, I knew that I had to get involved” said Dan
Martinez.  “Keeping Ashley and Brandon’s memories alive and
bringing community awareness on the child abuse issue seemed to
be the right thing to do.”

The Ashley and Brandon Memorial Golf Tournament has raised
over $70,000 in support of the Center.  Because of their efforts,
desire and dedication to making a difference in our community, the
Child Crisis Center has appointed Daniel Martinez, Fernando
Castor, Gilbert Nevarez and David Elwell, Child Crisis Center
Ambassadors.
