A 7-month-old is found in an El Paso lodge.  She
is not breathing.  She has broken ribs, a broken
arm and two broken legs.  The baby’s mother and
her boyfriend are charged in her death. ~ A 2-
year old girl is found dead in an eastside
apartment, badly beaten to death.  Her 4-year old
brother is also badly beaten, but he survives.
Their military parents are deployed overseas.
The children’s Godparents are convicted of the
crimes.  ~Yet another death: a 2-year old girl is
found in the trunk of a car.  The baby’s mother
and her boyfriend are arrested.  These are just
three of the child abuse deaths in El Paso’s recent
past.  There have been several others.
Why did these children die at the hands of those
who were supposed to protect them?  Did they
cry too loud?  Did they soil their diapers one too
many times?  Were they crying in the middle of
the night?  What could cause an adult to beat a
baby so severely as to break ribs, an arm and two
legs?  I am sure that the only thing these babies
did was – be babies.
...We at the El Paso Child Crisis Center believe
that spanking and hitting a child is never the
right response..
